Lawn Scarification

What is scarifying?

  • This is sometimes called dethatching; it’s the process of hard raking and clearing the old dead grass and thatch from the swarth to allow new growth and more ventilation at the base of the grass plant.
  • Scarification
Annual scarification is an absolute necessity for a great lawn.
In autumn we scarify the lawns to remove thatch and debris that has accumulated over the mowing season. This thatch build up will be choking the grass and making it difficult for the base of the sward to ventilate therefore allowing it to stay damp through the winter, an ideal environment for moss.
Scarifying is probably the most difficult of procedure to perform on a lawn and is usually overlooked as the weather turns cold and the days draw in.
  • The normal time for scarifying is in autumn, but spring is also a good time especially when moss has been a problem all winter.
  • It’s important that scarification is carried out at a time when there is a chance of good recovery so that the lawn can look good again in a couple of weeks. We are often called to visit some lawn which absolutely neglected and full of thatch and moss, in this case it doesn’t really matter when we scarify it, as it’s hardly going to make it worse.

We are often asked “When is the best time to scarify a lawn?”

The best time is the autumn.

From late September, through October till about mid-November.

The reason for this is we want the grass to be able to recover and as the temperature drops the growing gets slower so at some time in November I have to call a halt when the ground temperature get too low.

“What about scarification in the Spring?”

Yes you can scarify in the spring, but you have to be prepared to water the lawn if there is a spring drought or else the lawn could look sorry all summer.

  • Now let your winter of discontent be made glorious summer- call Tony's team - they'll come your way-some time in May-and your green green grass of home will be the envy of Neighbours - by Summer Time, when the living is easy.

With apologies to Will Shakespeare, Tom Jones and others!
